It began with Mark Hughes, who developed a lifelong passion for nutrition and healthy weight management after experiencing personal tragedy. For years Mark watched his mother's health deteriorate as she tried one diet after another to lose weight. Then she died at age 36 from an accidental overdose of prescription diet pills.

He developed Herbalife which now helps people lose and control weight safely and effectively through good nutrition throughout the world.

 The young man vowed to develop an organization that would put the kind of reliable information and safe, effective products that his mother never had, into the hands of millions. "It became my life's ambition." Mark said. " I wanted to integrate herbs and other natural ingredients into a safe, effective way of controlling weight - and I wanted to do it in a manner that would benefit everyone. I

Mark became involved in the weight-loss industry, first joining one company and then another. Both companies distributed nutritional products through independent Distributors. Through hard work, dedication and applying the principles of network marketing, Mark quickly became one of the top Distributors. However, both companies failed to fulfil their ethical commitments to their Distributors and went out of business.

Shortly after, Mark met Dr. Bruce Halsted, a world-renowned physician from Los Angeles, California, who specialised in cancer therapy. Learning of Mark's interest in safe weight loss and sound nutrition, Dr. Halsted invited him to a symposium on Chinese herbs. Mark's excitement grew as he listened to expert after expert explain how the Chinese have used herbs for thousands of years to improve health and well-being. Mark visited China and became convinced that by combining ancient herbal wisdom with state-of-the-art technology, he could create the most innovative and effective weight-management and nutritional products in the world.

Mark met Richard Marconi, a leading developer and manufacturer of nutritional products in California. Discovering their interests were similar, they decided to work together. Although herbs and botanicals were unfamiliar to most Westerners at the time, Mark and Richard wanted to formulate the absolute best products so everyone could benefit from herbal nutrition.

As a result of comprehensive research, development and testing, the original Herbalife Weight-Management Program was born in 1980. What began as a product Mark sold out of the trunk of his car has now become a global organisation enriching the lives of millions of people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

n 1997 Mark Hughes won the USA ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ award. 

His dream became a reality, and continues to do so since his death, under the leadership of CEO Christopher Pair and 15 seriously committed Chairman’s Class Members.
